Trees were recently cut down along Village Center Boulevard in Carolina Forest, next to the Carolina Bays Medical Office Building.
The doctor’s office is now visible to drivers commuting along International Drive into the Carolina Forest area. The tree removal is the initial stage for a development project that could see a new self-storage facility open in the Grand Strand.
Horry County Land Records show that the tract received a permit for a self-storage facility in October 2024. The property also received a permit Jan. 8, 2025, with the description ‘Public Storage’. Public Storage is a national self-storage firm with locations in Conway and Myrtle Beach.
Horry County Land Records shows that the owner of the permit is Matthew Toussaint. According to the company’s website, Toussaint is a real estate professional with Public Storage. Toussaint did not return a request for comment before publication. Horry County Land Records shows that the more than eight-acre property sold for $1.8 million in May 2024.
The new building isn’t the only project under development in Carolina Forest. Across from it on International Drive, construction continues on The Soho Town Center. The Sun News reported in October 2023 that the new shopping site will feature a two-floor restaurant and other retail spaces.
The center will cost between $7-8 million to complete. The Soho Town Center will join a new Anderson Brothers Bank branch next to the restaurant and retail facility.
