{"id":1621,"date":"2022-01-03T16:22:01","date_gmt":"2022-01-03T16:22:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/listselfstorage.com\/us\/industry-insights\/?p=1621"},"modified":"2022-01-03T16:22:01","modified_gmt":"2022-01-03T16:22:01","slug":"maumee-passes-moratorium-on-new-storage-facilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/listselfstorage.com\/us\/industry-insights\/maumee-passes-moratorium-on-new-storage-facilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Maumee Passes Moratorium on New Storage Facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- VideographyWP Plugin Message: Automatic video embedding prevented by plugin options. --><br \/>\nDuring a special meeting Thursday, Maumee City Council passed a temporary moratorium on mini-warehouse facilities in the city, halting the approval of any permits, plans and applications for new construction.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry Sawicki, co-owner of a property that was planned to be sold and developed for the expansion of a self storage business, said the passage of the moratorium was underhanded and nontransparent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unconscionable to spring this,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s wrong to deny us what is otherwise a permitted use under their own zoning code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The property that Mr. Sawicki co-owns is approximately seven acres located at 919 Illinois Ave. Five years ago, he said, the property was about 15 acres but half was sold to the owner of a self storage business \u2014 the same owner who now wants to expand.<\/p>\n<p>The deal was scheduled to be closed this week. But with the city\u2019s recent actions, it\u2019s been put on hold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe city of Maumee should know better than this,\u201d Mr. Sawicki said.<\/p>\n<p>Gene Abercrombie, a Toledo attorney representing the Illinois Avenue property owners, said the moratorium is temporary but could be extended. Typically, Mr. Abercrombie said when municipalities issue moratoriums, it\u2019s to address issues of health or safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve really given us no reason for it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The property owners were also upset that they were given no chance to speak at the meeting Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo public comment, no public input,\u201d said Steve Serchuk, one of the four owners.\u00a0\u201cThis is criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Rich Carr said because the meeting was a special meeting, no public comments needed to be taken. He also said the city didn\u2019t pass any new legislation or change any law \u2014 officials paused the process on mini-warehouse facilities so that leaders could review the city\u2019s building codes and zoning laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve made major changes to the building code in the past year and a half,\u201d Mr. Carr said.<\/p>\n<p>He also noted that the city had no active applications for new or expanded mini-warehouse facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Source<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a special meeting Thursday, Maumee City Council passed a temporary moratorium on mini-warehouse facilities in the city, halting the approval of any permits, plans and applications for new construction.
