The owner of a self-storage facility in Englewood wants to expand his business.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Joey Madden, president of MSC Englewood LLC and owner of Extra Space Storage located at 360 W. National Road in Englewood, in the former K-Mart building, is seeking city approval to expand the storage facility and develop additional retail and public space.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Englewood Planning Commission on Wednesday recommended denial of Madden\u2019s request, which will now go to council for final approval or rejection on Feb. 25.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that the property as currently used and configured is underutilized; we believe this site is appropriate for more intensive use and development,\u201d Madden wrote in his application.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Madden hopes to develop a \u201cpocket park\u201d in an area of the 9.6-acre site. The park would be situated along National Road, in an area that\u2019s currently vacant and grass-covered.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Plans also include development of a \u201cfuture modern retail center\u201d just south of the park on a section of what is currently a large parking lot in front of the storage facility, along with a restaurant\/coffee shop to the west of the proposed park, just east of McDonald\u2019s on West National Road.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The expansion of the storage business would include the addition of multiple rows of outdoor storage garages. The current 84,000-square-foot Extra Space Storage business is an all-indoor facility.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Madden states in his application that the plans would create a pedestrian-friendly and aesthetically-pleasing environment, \u201csatisfy consumer needs\u201d with regionally competitive businesses, and eliminate the \u201csea of asphalt\u201d by productively repurposing the majority of the under-used parking lot.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
