Menards obtained approval of its operational plan for a new self-storage facility on the south side of Rice Lake near its retail store, but the Plan Commission had a few contingencies.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For a couple of years, Menards has sought to build a self-storage facility on the southeast corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Highway O. Plans call for the construction of 245 non-climate-controlled units of various sizes from 10-by-10 feet to 10-by-20 feet. The self-storage units will be considered an extension of the nearby store, and local staff will be in charge of operations and provide oversight.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But Menards’ plan has faced opposition primarily in the form of concerns over emergency access.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

These concerns have been addressed with Barron County giving permission for a drive off Highway O, with the understanding that a locked entrance gate be installed and access reserved solely for emergency vehicles.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Primary access to the site will be off Wisconsin Avenue. Menards owns this land as well as the property upon which a nearby residence is located, but questions arose over the use of the driveway for both commercial and residential use.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The company has plans for existing landscaping to provide a natural buffer area on the western property line, but Commissioner Dana Heller advised fencing as well.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Plan Commission on Thursday decided to approve the building, site and operational plan for the Menard Storage Facility contingent on an easement being granted for the new driveway, ensuring that the driveway meets code and can be made wide enough to accomplish that, and the use of aesthetic fencing between residents and the property.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“I see this as an asset,” Commissioner Dana Heller said as he motioned to approve. All of his fellow commissioners present \u2014 Marlene Dirkes, Marv Thompson, Harlan Dodge and D. Puthoff \u2014 approved the motion.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
