One of the most frequently asked questions we get from our self storage clients is whether investing in social media will help their facility’s search engine optimization (SEO) strategy. The short answer is…it’s up for debate. So let’s talk about it!
Links on Social Media
If someone links to your facility’s site on social media, this doesn’t directly help your search engine results page (SERP) rankings on Google. This can be confusing as you may have heard that getting backlinks from high-authority sites helps your SEO. And aren’t sites like Facebook and Instagram pretty well-respected in the grand scheme of the internet?
The problem is that while these sites are some of the most notorious on the web, Google is savvy enough to know that they also allow pretty much anyone to make an account and start posting things. These individuals do not have credibility in Google’s eyes and these links are therefore what’s called “nofollow” links. This simply means that if someone uses the link, it isn’t going to tell Google to rank your website any higher than it already is. In other words, these links don’t pass along any authority.
Social media can play a role in your facility’s SEO success. However, it may be more valuable to focus on things like making edits to ensure your site is following Google’s best practices or keeping your website updated (and keyword-rich) by writing and posting blog content. Take a look at your website analytics to determine where your audience is visiting from. You may consider concentrating your energy on getting good reviews on your Google My Business listing so you rank well in local SERP (Search Engine Results Page) sections.
