Another large storage facility could be coming to the west end of Stamford.

Extra Space Storage is planning to build a 61,077-square-foot, three-story structure off West Main Street at Commerce Road, with 522 storage units. Three other large storage facilities operated by ESS are already located on the same four-acre site, which is near the Greenwich town border.

“The self-storage business has been in high demand in Stamford,” said Jason Klein, an attorney representing the project, at a recent meeting of the city Planning Board.

Klein noted that the site was an old warehouse district in the 1950s and 1960s, and it later became a self-storage business in the 1970s and 1980s. He noted that the addition was “on a property that’s already put to that use.” The new structure, he continued, would “avoid the need for construction of new self-storage facilities on properties better suited for other uses.”

The city Planning Board had no objections to the project at a brief hearing in May and unanimously agreed to pass the application on to the Zoning Board for site-plan approval. The Zoning Board is expected to review the proposal at its meeting on Monday.

The self-storage businesses in the city have been booming in recent years, as part of the expansion of residential units in Stamford.
