Wellgreen Lane Building to Become Self-Storage Facility in Sterling, Scotland

A plan to convert a former Stirling food bank premises into 55 self-storage units has been approved.

Stirling Community Food closed its doors at 5 Wellgreen Lane in December 2024, after more than four years of working to reduce food waste by offering excess items to the local community for free.

In April, a planning application to turn the building into managed storage units was submitted, and Stirling Council gave the plan the go-ahead this week.

According to the local authority’s report of handling, the storage spaces are likely to be used by private individuals “for domestic purposes”, due to the small sizes of the units planned.

  • The business will be permitted to operate between the hours of 7am and 11pm, Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 9pm on Sundays.
  • The proposed designs show storage units of various sizes spread across two floors, as well as a lift and toilets.
  • The building’s exterior will remain the same, with no changes required.
  • Parking could pose an issue
  • No objections were raised regarding the application.

Stirling Council officers wrote: “The proposal is not considered to impact the character or interest of the Conservation Area, and is compatible with the existing uses along Wellgreen Lane.”

However, there seems to be some concern over where customers might park when accessing their storage spaces.

There will be no dedicated parking for the facility. Parking is available at the multi-storey car park opposite, as well as further up Wellgreen Lane.

In an informal decision note included on its decision notice, Stirling Council advised the applicant not to encourage parking that goes against the traffic rules already in place on the street.
